Saltholme, Rec Pond, near Hartlepool
Saltholme is the large pools either side of the A178, which runs from Seaton Carew to Port Clarence. It has many different varieties of water birds present, varieties spotted there recently include, Ruff, Little Egret, Great White Egret, White-Headed Duck, Red Crested Pochard and Smew are some of the water rarities. Other birds spotted here include Little Gull, Hen and Marsh Harrier, Peregrine, Merlin, Black Tern and Caspian Gull. There are, of course, always Mute Swans, Lapwing, Redshank, Ruddy Ducks, Moorhen and Coot, etc present all of the time.
Dorman's pool lies between the Saltholme pools and the Reclamation (Rec) pond. As these pools are so close together, the same birds are often found at all 3 sites. Access to the Rec pond is rumoured to be restricted in the near future for vehicles, so please check before attempting to drive to this site.
